The Tomb Raider 30-Day Challenge

Quite a few Tomb Raider fans and fansite admins have been taking part in the “Tomb Raider 30-Day Challenge” over on Twitter and other social media this month and while I’m normally useless at keeping up with daily challenges, I thought I’d go ahead and jump on the proverbial bandwagon. The Tomb Raider 30-Day Challenge was launched by Portuguese fansite The Croft Tomb a couple of years ago and covers the full scope of the Tomb Raider franchise, from the games themselves to the spin-off media and movies. Participants are encouraged to post one reply per day (it *is* a ... [Continue Reading]

Free Archaeology & Ancient History Online Courses for 2017

If you’ve always wanted to study archaeology or ancient history but have had to set aside those dreams due to a lack of finances, time, or suitable classes in your area, web-based MOOCs, or massive open online courses, may be just the thing for you. MOOCs have helped transform education in recent years, making it easier (and cheaper) for people across the world to enroll on a wide range of academic or professional courses offered by some the world’s leading universities and E-learning companies, and granting them the freedom to schedule their studies around their jobs, families, ... ‘Star Wars’ Locations That Would Be Great for a ‘Tomb Raider’ Game

Star Wars season is upon us once more as the highly-anticipated anthology film Rogue One is set to hit cinema screens this December! And since I’m as big a Star Wars fangirl as I am a Tomb Raider one, I thought I’d try to find a way to celebrate two of my favourite franchises, albeit with an archaeological twist. The Tomb Raider video game series and films have done a tremendous job of showcasing some of the world’s historical sites and exotic locations, whether they’re well-known attractions such as the pyramids at Giza or Angkor Wat or the less commonly known ... The Secrets of Croft Manor: ‘Blood Ties’ Easter Eggs

Tracking down Easter eggs in video games is one of the joys of gaming and the ‘Blood Ties’ DLC is rife with references and amusing nods to Lara’s past adventures, making it a real treat for long-time fans of the Tomb Raider series. Whether it’s a familiar object or a subtle nod to Lara’s original backstory, I’ve tried to track down and list as many of the ‘Blood Ties’ Easter eggs as I could find. Please note that this might not be a complete list (new items may be added as they’re discovered) and that this list **contains spoilers** for ... [Continue Reading]

What We Know About the New ‘Tomb Raider’ Film So Far

It feels like a project that’s been years (dare I say “too many years”) in the making but the long-awaited reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise is finally picking up steam! Back in April, we learnt that Swedish actress Alicia Vikander won the coveted lead role and now it seems we have a release date for the as-yet untitled film: March 16, 2018. Further details about the cast and synopsis will be no doubt surface as the film nears completion but here’s what we know about the film so far: NOTE: This list will no longer be updated. You can find more articles about ... [Continue Reading]

Square Enix Presents the Top Tombs of Tomb Raider

Another E3 has come and gone and while we’re still waiting for news of a PS4 release for Rise of the Tomb Raider, we got a little sneak peek of the upcoming commemorative book, 20 Years of Tomb Raider: Digging Up the Past, Defining the Future, and learnt that a new series of statues has been commissioned to celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary. The Crystal Dynamics crew also took part in a number of live events throughout the week, most notably the Square Enix Presents show, #TombRaider20: Top Tombs, in which Tomb Raider fans Raymond Croft and Jade Jolie joined Senior ... Unearthing ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ Easter Eggs

The Tomb Raider series has always had its fair share of “Easter eggs”, hidden secrets, and amusing references to pop culture icons, and Lara’s latest adventure, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is no exception. From references to Lara’s earlier adventures to touching tributes to one of the world’s most-loved fantasy authors, there’s plenty to keep the eagle-eyed fan busy. Here’s my attempt to catalogue some of Rise of the Tomb Raider’s most memorable “Easter eggs”. This list is a “work in progress” so expect new ... [Continue Reading]

6 Siberia Travelogues for the Armchair Adventurer

Lara Croft’s latest adventure takes her to the forests and mountain ranges of Siberia, a vast and often misunderstood region that stretches from Russia’s Ural Mountains to the country’s north Pacific coastline. Commonly viewed as a region of Arctic wastelands and Soviet-era prison camps, Siberia is a land full of stunning natural landscapes and home to numerous indigenous peoples. Many of us may never get the chance to follow in Ms Croft’s footsteps due to financial or physical limitations, so here’s a list of books that will allow you to explore the ... [Continue Reading]

10 Things I Love About the Rise of the Tomb Raider Syria Demo

The long-awaited Syria gameplay demo has finally been released to the public and it has reaffirmed my belief that Rise of the Tomb Raider may turn out to be the best Tomb Raider game of recent years. Aside from a few minor gripes (which I will touch upon later), the demo was a 13-minute homage to the TR games of yesteryear and a welcome change from the combat-heavy demos we’ve seen so far. There’s a lot to love about this new demo. Here are my 10 favourite things in no particular order: 1) The opening scene – There’s something about the opening scene that reminds me ... 5 Female Explorers Who Made Their Marks in Siberia

Based on what we’ve seen of Rise of the Tomb Raider so far, a good portion of the game will take place in Siberia, a region in the Russian Federation that is commonly (and incorrectly) viewed as little more than an icy wilderness, a place where political undesirables were sent away to languish in Soviet labour camps. But this expansive region is actually home to dozens of indigenous peoples and a wide variety of landscapes, from sweeping tundra and alpine forests to majestic mountain ranges and beautiful crystal-clear lakes. Scores of explorers, scientists, and writers ... [Continue Reading]

Lara Croft’s Jurassic World – Five Memorable Moments With Dinosaurs

Now, repeat after me: Archaeologists don’t dig dinosaurs. They. Do NOT. Dig dinosaurs. There’s such a wide misconception that archaeologists dig up fossils and dinosaur bones for a living that some musically-minded archaeologists have taken to Youtube to remind the public, in no uncertain terms, that they “don’t do dinosaurs” and that “digging up dinos is palaeontology”. So if it’s dinosaurs you’re after, it’s Dr Grant you need, not Dr Jones. But then you have Lara Croft, who seemingly has one foot in archaeology and the other ... [Continue Reading]

15 Awesome Tomb Raider Easter Eggs

One of the greatest pleasures in video gaming is the discovery (intentional or otherwise) of “Easter eggs”, those little jokes, secret levels, or hidden messages that game developers insert in their games for the players’ amusement. With a back catalogue spanning almost two decades and across multiple platforms, the Tomb Raider series has had its fair share of “Easter eggs”, ranging from humourous references to fan community in-jokes to visual gags that may be missed on a first playthrough. If you’re looking for a list of Rise of the Tomb Raider Easter ... [Continue Reading]

15 Things to Look Forward to in 2015

As I mentioned in an earlier blog post, 2014 was a fairly epic year for Tomb Raider fans and I have no doubt that 2015 will try its best to top the successes of the past year. As a fan community, what should we get excited about and what can we expect to see in 2015? Well, here are 15 things we Tomb Raider fans can look forward to next year: 1) The Rise of the Tomb Raider – This one’s a no-brainer. The highly anticipated sequel to 2013’s reboot will be coming to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in December 2015 (an official release date has yet to be confirmed) and, if the release ... My Top 10 Tomb Raider Moments of 2014

2014 has been one rollercoaster of a year for Tomb Raider fans. The year kicked off with the release of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One, giving new-gen console owners the chance to relive Lara’s ordeal on Yamatai in all its high-def glory. Tomb Raider fans have also been treated to a wide range of new Tomb Raider merchandise, including a brand-new comic series penned by Gail Simone and Rhianna Pratchett, the novel The Ten Thousand Immortals, and a slew of branded clothing and accessories. And let’s not forget the E3 2014 event back in June, ... [Continue Reading]
