Preview: Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen #1

Our first look at Dark Horse's new comic series, Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen

Update: You can read my review of issue 1 over here!

Dark Horse Comics has published a 6-page preview of Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen #1 and, quite frankly, 7th October can’t come soon enough. I need this new comic series in my life, like, now. 🙂

First announced back in June, Frozen Omen is a 5-part mini-series set in the Lara Croft universe and is penned by Corinna Bechko, best known for her work on Star Wars: Legacy Volume II and Image Comics’ sci-fi series, Invisible Republic. The series will see our heroine race against time to track down some ancient artefacts and stop a group of cultists from using them for their own nefarious purposes.

Carter Bell, the “up-and-coming archaeologist” first introduced in Temple of Osiris, is back for another adventure with our favourite female treasure hunter. While there was some friendly banter between him and Lara in Temple, we never got to learn much about Carter throughout the course of the game or even in the more recently-released Relic Run, so it’s refreshing to see that his character has finally been fleshed out beyond the generic “rival-turned-ally archaeologist” seen thus far. And he’s an aspiring falconer! *thumbs up*

It’s hard to judge an entire comic series (even a short one) by a 6-page preview but based on what I’ve seen so far, it looks like fans of “classic” Tomb Raider are in for a treat. Dual pistols, cliff-climbing without proper climbing gear, pet hawks, beautiful art by veteran Tomb Raider comic artist Randy Green. What’s not to love?

Sure, the Lara Croft universe may not fall under some people’s definition of “classic” Tomb Raider (after all, this spin-off brand was created by Crystal Dynamics just five years ago) but this Lara is probably as close to the original Core Design character as we’re going to get and it’s clear from the get-go that Frozen Omen will be a light-hearted archaeo-adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Not that there’s anything wrong with the reboot or the spin-off comic series per sé. But sometimes we just need a little less grit and a little more wit. 😉

Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen #1 will be out on 7th October 2015. Order your copy on Amazon or Amazon UK today!
