Square Enix Confirms PC and PS4 Release for Rise of the Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to Steam and Windows 10 PC in Early 2016, PS4 in Late 2016

Months of anger, rumours, and speculation have been put to rest as Square Enix has finally announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be coming to Windows 10 PC, Steam, and Playstation 4 next year.

No exact dates have been released at this stage but according to Square Enix, the game will be released on Steam and Windows 10 PC in early 2016 while Playstation 4 gamers will have to wait until “Holiday 2016”. This means Rise of the Tomb Raider will be a console exclusive to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 for about a year but, on the plus side, it confirms that the game is a timed exclusive after all.

There has been no word of a Playstation 3 or Mac release as yet and no further details regarding the Playstation 4 version are available at this point in time. A year may be a long time to wait for a game (especially in the age of online spoilers) but there’s always a chance that Square Enix will sell the PS4 version at a discounted rate and/or bundle it with all the relevant DLC to appease the franchise’s PS fanbase.

Things are certainly looking a little less grim now that we know that Square Enix hasn’t turned its back on the PC and Playstation fanbase entirely. And, as they say, “good things come to those who wait”. Let’s hope there’s some truth to that old adage…

Don’t forget that you have until 10th November 2015 to pre-order your copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider for the Xbox One or 360 over on Amazon and Amazon UK. Pre-order links for the PC and Playstation 4 will be posted here once these are available.

So, Raider fans, will you still be rushing out to buy an Xbox One in order to play Rise this November or will you be willing to wait for the PS4 version? What are your thoughts on the announcement? Is a year a long time to wait? Feel free to share your thoughts below!

  1. On the bright side, there might be something extra included in the PS4 version to compensate those gamers for having to wait….

I’ll wait for PS4 version! That’s gonna be perfect time, since I collect money for PS4, and I should have one by that time.

    • Same here. I wasn’t planning to buy an Xbox One for just this game so I’m relieved that it will come to the PS4 (even if it’s a year later). I do have an Xbox 360 so I might get myself a second-hand copy of the 360 version so that I don’t feel too left out. 😉

  3. As a PC player, it’s alright for me personally, but… this is so insulting to PS4-owning players.

I’m not even sure it will work as they intend it to. If someone didn’t buy an Xbox One before, further more if they already own a PS4, it’s most likely they won’t purchase it for just one game.

I’d understand it if the Xbox One console were to be released a day before the Rise of the Tomb Raider launch, because promotional packs featuring both products would make a lot of sense, but this isn’t the case…

    • It’d be interesting to see how many people changed their minds about getting an Xbox One when they announced the PC/PS4 release. I know a few people who were tempted to get an Xbox but decided they’d rather just wait the extra year for the game.

  4. I’m going to wait until it comes out on PS4. Uncharted 4 should tide me over til then! I hope this one has more tombs and puzzles than the last Tomb Raider

  5. Vague release windows at best, but it’s good news and I’ll take them! I do hope they handle the ports in-house. We’ve seen with Arkham Knight what happens when you give the task to a third party studios.

Early 2016 for steam will probably be for April-May. Hopefully they won’t push it back as far as the PS4 version.

    • To me, early 2016 means any time between January 1st and mid to late April (anything later would be mid-2016). I reckon it’ll be out in February or March but that’s just a guess. As for the PS4 release, I expect it won’t be out till at least early November…perhaps even a year to the day of the Xbox release. 😉

      • The PS4 prediction sounds spot on. Wouldn’t be surprising if it was 1 year to the date. Sounds like something they’d pull.

As for PC I’d lean towards ends of March or even mid April
