Rumours of a new Tomb Raider film have been floating about the Internet ever since the release of the critically-acclaimed Tomb Raider 2013 and there appeared to be some glimmer of hope when GK Films and MGM announced that Marti Noxon, a screenwriter best known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, had been hired to work on the script.
Everything was falling into place. Or so we thought. Months went by without an update and Noxon’s reluctance to discuss her involvement in the project seemed to confirm fans’ fears that plans for a new Tomb Raider film would never see the light of day.
But then MGM came along, sailing on the wave of hype generated by Game Informer’s month-long spotlight on Rise of the Tomb Raider, to announce that a new screenwriter had been hired and that Warner Bros had signed on to co-finance, co-produce, and distribute a brand-new Tomb Raider film.
Deadline reported that Evan Daugherty had been brought in to replace Marti Noxon and that the film would be a reboot featuring a younger Lara Croft embarking on her first adventure. Whether this means the film will be an adaptation of the 2013 game remains to be seen. What we do know so far is that MGM, GK Films, and Warner Bros are “fast-tracking” the reboot and that there is currently no information on the film’s cast or release date.
Daugherty’s most recent projects include Snow White and the Huntsman, the film adaptation of the popular young-adult novel Divergent, and the less-than-spectacular 2014 blockbuster Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Let’s see if he’s able to craft a story worthy of Ms Croft…
Do you think Evan Daugherty is up to the task? And who would you like to see cast as Lara Croft? Do we even need a new Tomb Raider film at this point? Feel free to share your comments and/or concerns below!
