Hi! My name is Gabriel and I’m a 13-year-old from the West Midlands, England. I love to draw a lot but my biggest passion is Tomb Raider! I think that I might be one of the youngest Tomb Raider fans out there.
When and how did you learn about the Tomb Raider series?
Well, I learnt about it from my dad. He used to play the games when I was younger and I used to love to watch him play! I can remember snippets of Angel of Darkness but I was around 3 at the time. The game that really got me into Tomb Raider was Legend, which was one of the first games I could play (mostly) by myself.
Do you run a Tomb Raider fansite or blog? If so, what would you say was your biggest achievement to date?
Well, I run a fan page on Facebook if that counts. It’s called ‘The Tomb Raiders’ and I have been running it for a few months now. Out of it, I have met a few fellow Tomb Raider fans, which has been nice!
How has Tomb Raider changed your life?
Lara has helped me think differently. She makes me feel more confident in myself and others and she has taught me to fight for what I want in life.
Were you interested in archaeology before discovering Tomb Raider? Have the Tomb Raider games and films inspired you to learn more about ancient history?
No, I wasn’t interested in archaeology before. Lara just makes it more ‘fun’ in a sense. The Tomb Raider franchise has inspired me to learn more about ancient history so I can understand more about what Lara is talking about.
What are your thoughts on Lara’s image? Is she simply the product of a sexist gaming industry or can she be seen as a positive role model?
For me, Lara isn’t just a sexy icon in gaming; she is a symbol of strength, agility and power! As a male, I can understand why she is classed as a sex symbol, but that’s not what she is to me personally so I don’t care what other people say about her. Lara is the type of girl I would like to meet some day.
What’s your favourite Tomb Raider game?
Ummm, Underworld has got to be my favourite Tomb Raider by far! The beautiful gameplay, graphics, settings. Plus they got Toby back, which made it even better!
And your least favourite game?
I don’t have one.
Classic, Legend-Anniversary-Underworld or Reboot Lara?
I would have to say all of them. They are all just so amazing!
Do you have any favourite Tomb Raider moments or quotes?
One of my favourite moments is the scene in the Japan level of Legend where she meets Takamoto! My favourite quote is “The extraordinary is in what we do, not who we are”.
What about least favourite moments? Is there anything you dislike about the games/films/comics?
I have a least favourite quote: “I’m not strong enough”. It gets on my nerves when you just want to push a box in Angel of Darkness and Lara says “I’m not strong enough”. I always scream “How do I make you stronger?!” and end up getting so annoyed that I stop playing!
If you could change one thing about the Tomb Raider franchise, what would you change?
I want the reboot to turn back towards the classics. They can keep the same Lara but they need to add more challenging puzzles, add more environments to explore and bring back the classic outfit!
Which places would you like to see Lara explore in future games?
I would say Spain. I haven’t seen her go there before! Or she could visit Greece again and be faced with Greek mythical creatures e.g. Medusa or the minotaur.
Finally, if you could join Lara on one of her adventures, where would you go?
I wouldn’t mind where I went as long as I am with Lara!
